HARRIERS ON TOUR APRIL 2001

The Harriers were once again on their travels, this time to Germany to compete in the Bruggen 10.  A great time was had by all ( the cheap beer and Wine might have had something to do with it!).  The race had 1600 competitors which was great to see, however the only problem on the day was the weather, a really fierce wind was gusting, which made the last mile really tortuous.  Two of us managed to successfully break the hour and claim our "Sub 60" T-Shirts, and a couple of the lads unfortunately missed it by a minute.  We also met up with a former Harrier, Nikki Munro, Don't forget to come down for a run the next time you are in the area.

RUNNING IN A SAUNA

Just what is it like to run in a Sauna? Having competed in Road Races abroad, I have run in many different climates, and without doubt the warm, humid weather of Florida is as near a Sauna as you will get!

Don’t let me put you off the idea of running if you are in the vicinity on vacation. Personally speaking after you become acclimatised it does become a little easier, the only problem being, you just can’t get enough fluids down your neck.

If you are out in Florida and you find that you are getting a bit frisky, don’t be afraid to enter some of the many races that are organised all over the State. One of the easiest ways to find out about races and running clubs is to ask at one of the large sports equipment stores e.g. THE SPORTS AUTHORITY (many bargains to be had on all types of running equipment in the Sales!).

Once you have plucked up the courage to enter a race here is what to expect:

1. A really friendly welcome, they love overseas visitors entering their races.

2. The entry fees vary, but are usually $20-$25. This may seem a bit excessive but the races are usually all about raising money for a local charity. However for your money you will normally receive a good quality tee-shirt, and an after race slap up meal if you can face it! The food that is available varies from the health conscious fruit to those yummy and fattening doughnuts and of course drinks galore, don’t be too surprised to even see free beer at some races, as the organisers appear to have very good contacts as far as sponsorship is concerned.

3. Finally loads of company through the race, as the running boom has not burst as it has over here. Even in the small races you can expect to see a field of around 200-300 runners.

Here are a few races in Florida that are on at the beginning of each year, good running:

Usually held around the second Saturday in March.

2. Miami (North Bay Village) Three Island Run (5 miles) No of runners100-200

4. Orlando Disney World Marathon & Half Marathon
