Moray Forest Runs Series  Quarrelwood (By Mark Ellis)

After an afternoon of dodging showers, the organisers of the latest round in the Moray Forest Runs set out their course.  The evening turned out to be a great success with 54 juniors and 105 seniors enjoying the undulating courses set by Paul Rogan.

In the senior race Ben Livesey, Forres Harriers broke away from the pack after a mile to establish an unassailable lead finishing in 23.40.  Behind a three way battle developed between the youthful vigour of Steven Cox, K&D, the tired but determined Paul Rogan, FH and the stealthy experience of Super Veteran George Sim, MRR.  Paul Rogan eventually broke the trio to take 2nd in 24.46 with George 3rd in 24.52.

In the ladies race Lydia Davies, MRR, held a ten second lead over the ever improving Eleanor Duncan, Forres Harriers to win in 29.36; Eleanor 29.46, closely followed by Michelle Green, MRR, 29.46.

The junior race, which in this round of the series covers an age range of 2 years old to 16 year olds was battled out at the front by Lewis Lyall, 5.27 2nd Fraser Scott 5.33.

Kirstie Rogan was clearly the class runner of the girls in her time of 5.47 ahead of Dionne Milne 6.27 and Natasha Webster 6.29.

As ever with events of this nature the runners have the fun and the glory but without a dedicated team behind the scenes this run would not happen.  So many thanks to Paul, Stu Burns and Bernie Foran for setting out the courses.  Mike Milmoe for running the course several times to check the markings were not tampered with, and Spynie Village Hall, especially Libby Petrie and her team producing results and refreshments.

The Highland Cross  21st June 2008

The Highland Cross is a 50 mile duathlon (20 mile run, 30 mile bike) traversing the Scottish Highlands coast to coast, west to east from Kintail to Beauly.  Two of our Harriers completed it this year, Simon Pride finishing 11th (3:58:55) and James Ward 27th (4:09:01).

Ben Aigan Hill Race organised by Graeme Bartlett.

This is a lovely little hill race of around 4.5 mile, starting and finishing just outside Craigellachie running a loop around and over the top of the hill. This year saw a record field with 37 competitors lining up on the start line. Forres Harriers fielded six runners, including Stu Burn, Mike Milmoe, Sam Morrison, Paul Rogan, it was also great to see two other old timers in Andy Beattie and Jim McGhee, and this was Jim’s first race in over four years. The race was won by Dan Whitehead of Cosmic HB followed by Craig Mitchell of Lochaber and local runner Robbie Cormack of Moray Road Runners, Paul Rogan was the first Harrier home in fourth position. The only lady in the line up was Claire Whitehead who beat the women’s course record by over a minute. This race is well worth trying to get to, so put it in your diary for next year, and just remember your midge cream!!!!

Mosstowie 5 mile Road Race organised by Frances Wardhaugh

This is a great low key race run from Mosstowie Primary School, with 29 competitors lining up on the start line. Hamish Cameron turned out to see if he could regain the trophy which he won in 2006, other harriers were Stu Burn and Paul Rogan. The weather was sunny and warm making the running a little more challenging. The race at the front was a battle between Paul and Simon Dobbs of Moray Road Runners, with Paul trying to run from the front from the start closely followed by Simon, these two broke away from the rest of the field, with Paul hanging on for the win, despite the slight hang over from the night before in a time of 27.54. The first lady home was the ever improving Michelle Green who is going from strength to strength at the moment. For a small race, the prize list was extensive, with well earned bottles of wine handed out along with whisky for the winners. Thanks to Frances and her army of helpers on the day.

Roseisle Forrest Run 11th June

Dry but cool weather saw a turn out of 153 senior runners 72 under 11’s  and 22 under 16’s for the 2nd event in the Moray Forest Runs Series held in Roseisle on Weds evening.

A fine healthy bunch of under-elevens tore around the course of just under a mile of beautiful undulating tracks for the first race of the day. Leading them in was Joe Durkacz in 4.37, Joe moved up to the winning position after coming second in last years race.  He was followed by Jack Durkacz in 4.51 who was in close competition with Oscar Heald 3rd in 4.53.

Th first under 11 girl was Dionne Milne in 4.58 with Katie Richards 2nd in 5.06 and Milly Johnstone 3rd in 5.12.  Many of last years leading under 11’s have now moved on to the longer Under 16 event.

The under 16 event started on the beach with the senior event, turning in at the Millie burn and then back after just under a mile mile to join the same route as the under-elevens.  The front-runners this year were Lewis Lyall of Nairn Academy finishing in 8.36 only just in front of Fraser Scott finishing in 8.37 followed in by the first Under 16 girl Kirsty Rogan in 8.56, Craig Daley claimed 3rd U 16 boy in 9.16

Kirsty Rogan 15 Forres Acc domination of the Girls under 16’s race for 2nd year in succession proved her strength as one of the few to improve her time against a cold strong head wind on the beach section with Natasha Webber 2nd 10.25 and Rebbeca Taylor 3rd 10.50.

The senior run attracted a fine field of 153, with a very pleasing mix of regular club athletes from Moray and beyond and (from a show of hand s at the start) many new runners using this low-key series as a first step into racing.  The course starts on the beach, which is always a magnificent sight to see all the runners streaming off towards Burghead, to turn in at the Millie Burn from there the course meanders through the forest across the old railway line and up nearly to Burghead before turning back through the woods over a couple of challenging sand dunes and back to the car park.

Unfortunately someone deliberately moving some of the course markings marred the senior race.  This resulted in a large contingent led by Ben Livesy running at full tilt towards Roseisle Village; Ben normally unstoppable when leading a race was eventually re-directed back on course with some serious catching up to do with the main field.

Ben, Forres Harriers, did regain the lead, showing typical determination and speed to record another win in a time of 27.05 over the ever green super Veteran George Sim, 27.30 and Andy Ross, 27.44.   Judging by last year’s times some of the leading runners must have run ¾ of mile further.

First Lady home was Emma Barton in 30.15 with 12 seconds behind her Jenny Bannerman 30.27Just ahead of Elspeth Jenkins in 30.32.

The group that went astray rejoining the rest of the field bunched the field up, this somewhat overwhelmed the finish line officials, therefore the results when published may be a little inaccurate.

The entire event raised £400.00 for Roseisle Village Hall whose committee provided many of the marshals for the course, the event entry/results team, all of the most welcome refreshments and the prizes.

This year Andrew Little of  Little the Jewellers has sponsored the provision of trophies for the Under 21’s male and female categories, so with two races to go there is now a race on to be the first recipient of these trophies.

Thanks also to the additional marshals from the Great Britain Biathlon Squad who as part of their training are completing an SVQ Level 2 in Community Sports Management.  It was great to have future Olympians helping out at this grass roots level sports event.

This year's Forrest Runs have kicked off again with a record turnout of competitors at the Culbin. It's the 10th aniversary of the run which attracted 155 adults and 84 children. In the childrens race Craig Campbell was first in 5:58 and the first girl was Dionne Milne in 7:00. A special mention must go to David Spencer who at 3 years old was the youngest competitor who did brilliant and was home in 19:27. Thanks to all that helped on the night.

Benromach 10K

There was a very good turn out for this year’s Benromach 10K with 225 finishers.  Conditions were warm with the glorious summer weather.  We would like to thank everyone who took part and also the organisers and helpers for making the day a great success.  Also, thank you to Benromach Distillery for allowing us to use their facilities.

The Benromach 10K is the last race in the Northern Scot 10K Series, which has been sponsored by the Northern Scot Newspaper for many years.

There was success for the host club with Ben Livesey winning the race in a fine time of 31:58.  Second home was Keith & Districts Frankie Barton (34:00) followed closely by his team mate Jeremy Whittet (34:10).  This meant that Frankie secured 1st place overall in the series.  Further down the field our very own Sam Morrison put in a Pb performance to take 2nd M50 in a time of 38:04 and also took 2nd MSV in the series.  Forres Harrier Hamish Cameron also picked up the prize for 2nd M60 in 41:14.

In the Ladies race 1st home was Elaine Whyte of Fraserburgh (39:10) who also took the series title.   Second was Suzanne Swann of Lothian (41:04) and 3rd place went to Lydia Davis of Moray Road runners in 41:42.  The Harrier Ladies had success with Jackie Nicol taking 2nd in the F40 category (44:45), Carol Murphy taking 3rd in the F50 category (55:09) and Anne Docherty taking 2nd in the F60 catergory (54:28).

The Moray College 10k, 20th March

The above event was held on a bright but chilly Sunday afternoon with a fantastic turn out of around 129 participants. It was organised by Paul Rogan and his fellow college buddies as part of their Event Management programme for their HNC/HND course. It was billed as a fast flat course although not all would agree with Mr R (we never believe him when he says a course is flat!!)although the winner, David Simpson of Carnegie said it was downhill all the way and his winning time of 32:03 reflected that. Second in the race was Forbes Reid of Aberdeen Metro in 35:52 just pipping Paul Rogan of the same finishing time. The first lady home was Elaine Whyte of Fraserburgh in 39:13,with Michelle Green MRR in 41:29 and Elspeth Jenkins MRR in 41:32. The first lady Harrier home was Moraig Lyall who knocked a minute of her previous best with a PB time of 44:39.Well done to her. A special mention is going to all of the" first timers", especially from the Jog Scotland group who did fantastic in their efforts. A huge well done to everyone. Well done also to Paul and his chums for a very well organised event and could this be a new race for our diaries? Hope so!!

Craig Dunain Hill Race - Sat 22 March

After a couple of days of truly dreadful weather, the winds abated and the showers held off to allow the Craig Dunain hill race in Inverness to go ahead in lovely, warm spring sunshine.

Five Forres Harriers were among the field of around 40 starters - Paul Rogan, Stu Burn, Adrian Hodges, Norrie and Moraig Lyall.

Good underfoot conditions made for some fast times: none faster than our very own gaffer, Paul, who, after an epic battle, won by some 20 seconds.

Norrie, Adrian and Stu followed him home, with Moraig the last Forres finisher, but still the winner of the Ladies' Vet. Prize!

A grand day out, Gromit! Excellent grub afterwards, too and a complimentary bottle of Cairngorm Sheep*****er ale for all finishers.

Full results will be available shortly on Inverness Harriers' website.

Fleet Half Marathon – Sunday 16th March

Inverness Half Marathon – 9th March

There was success at this years half with Harrier Ben Livesey taking second place in a time of 1hr10:29.  The rain held off and the wind was not as bad as forecast. The winner for the second year in a row was Perth Road Runner Michael Carroll (1hr 07:19).  First Lady home was Shona McIntosh of Glasgow University Hares & Hounds in a cracking time of 1hr 19:33.    There were several other Harriers competing and second harrier home was Stu Obree with a PB of 1hr 24:39.  Sam Morrison put in another fine performance to be first home in his M55+ category in 1hr 26:23.

The fine weather and westerly wind made conditions perfect for this year’s race and ensured some fast time and new Pb’s.  First man home was Thomas Boardman of Leigh Harriers in a time of 1:07:15 and an impressive 6mins ahead of 2nd placed Terry Christie of Peterhead.  First Lady home was Marion Wood of Arbroath Footers in a great time of 1:21:23.

The Harriers turned out in force (18 in all!!) and showed that the winter training had gone well with some great times & results.  Sam Morrison came 3rd in the SV category with a Pb performance.   Bev Childs achieved 2nd SV in this her 2nd race of the weekend.   Anni Johnstone & Anne Docherty teamed up well and both got Pb’s.  Adrian Hodges, Dave McCulloch & Carrie Ward (with a beasting from Andy Johnson!!) all put in strong runs to achieve new Pb’s.  Well done to Paul Rogan who informed us that this was a “PW for him “– translated means personal worst, although it was his 2nd race of the weekend so well done!!

North District Cross Country League - Forres 16th Feb

The last League race of the season took place this weekend and was hosted by us at Grant Park.  The course had to be changed slightly due to tree felling but it wasn’t any easier!!  There were still final positions to be decided for the North District League.

In the U13 Boys race Lewis Lyall came home in 5th place, this was enough to take 3rd overall in the League.  The U15 & U17 Girls and Boys showed us how it’s done with some impressive wins.  Kirsty Rogan & John Gillespie came 1st in their U15 race, and then Eleanor Duncan & Grant Cameron took 1st place in their U17 races.  This meant that Kirsty, Eleanor & John all secured 1st places in the overall League and Grant secured 2nd.

In the Men’s race, first Harrier home was Kyle Greig finishing 2nd but taking full points due to a guest winner.  Slightly further back Paul Rogan finished 7th gaining some valuable points and so taking 2nd overall in the League.  Even “Birthday Boy” SuperVet Dougie Cowie donned his spikes and put in a fine performance finishing 17th and 3rd SV in the race.  Mike Milmoe finished 27th and claimed 3rd SV in the League.  The Men’s team managed to take the 2nd team prize in the League behind a strong Keith & District Team.

In the Ladies race Bev Childs & Moraig Lyall battled out to be first Harrier home.  Bev finished 10th and 10 secs ahead of Moraig.  This meant that Bev claimed 1st place in the League in her SV category just 1 point ahead of team mate Jackie Nicol who secured 2nd place.

Well done to everyone who took part in this season League races and also to everyone who helped out at the weekend with our fixture.

Strathpeffer Cross Country - 9th Feb

Well done to all the Harriers who took part, especially for getting up that very steep hill!!  We are still awaiting the full results, but here are a few.  In the Girls U15 race Kirsty Rogan put in another fine run to take 1st place and Lewis Lyall was 2nd in the U13 Boys race.  There was a battle for 1st place in the Senior Ladies race between Dawn Scott (Lochaber) and Mari Todd (HHR), but Mari proved too strong on the last hill and took 1st place.  Paul Rogan put in a good performance to finish 5th in the Men's race.
